๐Ÿง  Pro Tip: Always Start With 2 Hives

Start with at minimum 2 hives โ€” if one fails, you can recover using resources from the other. A single hive is risky for beginners.

๐Ÿก Step 1 โ€” Apiary Setup (Your Bee Yard)

1

Location & Sunlight

Choose a flat, dry spot with morning sun. Morning sun gets bees active earlier and helps dry morning dew on the hive.

2

Away from Traffic

Place hives away from heavy foot traffic โ€” neighbors, pets, children. A fence or hedge helps direct flight paths upward.

3

Water Source

Bees need water nearby. Add a shallow dish with stones so they can land without drowning. Change water regularly.

4

Virginia Zoning

Check your county zoning rules. Most Virginia counties allow backyard beekeeping. Register your apiary with the state for free.

๐Ÿ Step 2 โ€” Hive Equipment

Hive Stand

Keeps hive off ground, prevents moisture damage and pests from entering bottom.

Bottom Board

Base of the hive. Screened bottom boards help with ventilation and mite monitoring.

Deep Super (Hive Body)

Main box where bees live and raise brood. Start with 1-2 deep supers per hive.

Frames

Wood/plastic inserts inside the boxes. Bees build comb on these frames. 10 per box.

Foundation Sheets

Wax or plastic sheets inside frames that guide bees to build uniform comb.

Inner + Outer Cover

Inner cover for ventilation, outer cover (weatherproof lid) to protect from rain and elements.

Entrance Reducer

Controls hive opening size. Use small opening for new colonies to help them defend.

Queen Excluder

Optional mesh that keeps the queen in the brood area, away from the honey super.

๐Ÿ Step 3 โ€” Getting Your Bees

Package Bees

3-pound box of bees + mated queen. Good for beginners. Order in winter for spring delivery from local suppliers.

Nucleus Colony (Nuc)

Recommended for beginners โ€” a mini established colony with 5 frames of brood, honey, and a laying queen. Easier start.

๐Ÿงค Step 4 โ€” Protective Gear

Full Beekeeping Suit

Full body protection. Essential for beginners. Look for ventilated suits for hot weather.

Veil (Face Protection)

Protects your face and head from stings. Can be part of suit or separate hood.

Leather Gloves

Thick gloves protect your hands. Goatskin gloves offer best dexterity while being sting-resistant.

High Ankle Boots

Protect ankles from bees crawling inside. Use rubber bands or tape around pants bottoms too.

๐Ÿ”ง Step 5 โ€” Essential Tools

Smoker

Most important tool. Smoke masks alarm pheromones and calms bees during inspections. Buy a good stainless steel one.

Hive Tool (J-Hook)

Metal pry bar for opening hive boxes and separating frames stuck with propolis.

๐Ÿ›’ Shop on Amazon

Bee Brush

Soft bristle brush to gently move bees off frames without harming them.

Frame Grip

Optional tool to safely lift and hold frames during inspections. Reduces drops.

๐Ÿฏ Step 6 โ€” Feeding & Maintenance

Hive Feeder

Top or entrance feeders for sugar syrup (1:1 spring, 2:1 fall). Feed new colonies until they establish.

Varroa Mite Treatment

Varroa mites are the #1 killer of hives. Use oxalic acid treatments regularly. Monitor mite levels monthly.

Pollen Substitute

MegaBee or similar patties help colonies build up population in early spring when natural pollen is scarce.

๐Ÿฏ Step 7 โ€” Honey Harvesting

Honey Extractor

Spins frames to extract honey by centrifugal force. Manual 2-frame extractors are fine for beginners.

Uncapping Knife

Heated knife to remove wax caps from honeycomb before extracting. Electric versions are faster.

๐Ÿ›’ Shop on Amazon

Food-Grade Buckets + Strainer

5-gallon buckets with honey gates for bottling. Use double strainer to remove wax particles.
